It’s A Good Buy With Great Security and Convenience Features
I’ve had this lock for about a week now. It was easy to install if one is replacing an existing lock and no cutting, drilling or mortising is involved. I did have to chisel out a bit of the door jamb to accommodate a larger strike plate. Aside from that, the Kwikset app walks you through each step to install the lock in the door and pair it with your phone. It also walks you through connecting to your Matter enabled hub and devices – Alexa, Google, Smart Things, etc. I chose this Kwikset Aura Reach because the rest of my locks are all Kwikset and I easily rekeyed the lock to my existing key using the “Smart Key” feature. This is also the latest generation of smart locks from Kwikset.I can’t speak to battery life yet. However, I read in more than one 1-star review of Kwikset smart locks that said the key will not work if the batteries fail; I tested this and did not find it to be true. I did discover that one of my copied keys was not cut correctly and does not work, so I wonder if those reviews were because of the key and not the lock. I also believe some of these lower rated reviews are from shills paid by Kwikset’s competitors.This is actually my second smart lock. The first was a Hornbill lock I bought on Amazon. It had great convenience features – multiple methods of unlocking. The problem I had with it was the deadbolt felt very loose – I could twist the bolt itself a fair amount compared to my original deadbolt. Another problem was the mechanical lock – the key is non-standard. It looks like a Schlage key, but it is shorter and I couldn’t get copies made. Additionally, the lock cylinder itself is not very robust when you compare it to a Kwikset, Schlage, or Yale cylinder. I leave this review here because I cannot review it on the Hornbill lock’s page; I think because it’s been too long (two years) and they have a newer model than mine.

Last Kwikset I buy
Kwikset is really cheaping out on their locks now. I’ve bought and installed about 20+ deadbolts from Kwikset over the last 10 years in 3 different homes, I used to think they were the best, this deadbolt really changed my mind.Up until this unit the shaft from the bolt handle was triangular and very rigid. 1) This new lock has a single piece of metal with tons of flex which I can see twisting and failing over time. 2) The previous bolts on all the units I’ve installed were tapered, to draw the door closed on the weather stripping when its locked, the new bolt has no tapper which means either A) You need to press your door in first and then lock it or B) You need to remove or replace your weather stripping with something that does seal as well and you’ve lost a tight seal from the elements.It also means that your smart lock will open fine but will never bolt properly since the bolt without the taper supplied with this lock won’t engage the door frame properly and fails to lock. Which is the whole reason I buy smart locks.And to add insult to injury I can’t use my old tapered bolt from the Kwikset I replaced with this new lock because they changed the shaft as I noted previously.

This is a nice deadbolt you can control with your phone, Kwikset does make better ones though.
I had a “coded deadbolt” that I used but it had a 6 digit coded entry and a “card key feature”. For some reason this deadbolt “lost” the codes frequently and I ended up just using it as a keyed deadbolt for a while now.My house as destroyed in the flood during the last hurricane, so I’ve been repairing my house now for over a YEAR since and many things took a backseat during this time. I didn’t even install this lock until a month ago and spent the last month “testing it!”It is a solid deadbolt from Kwikset, but this is not one of their “top of the line” models IMO. IT IS however, a nice deadbolt that has a coded entry and “Bluetooth” unlocking for when your hands are full.It has a nice finish to it and matches my expensive Kwikset handles on my front door. Installation was simple for me as it is pretty standard to install with just an extra plug for the keypad compared to a normal deadbolt and the app was a step by step to program it for blue tooth. I’ve found the blue tooth unlocking works well, but you have to now make sure that you don’t carry your phone to the front door if you don’t want it unlocked as you approach it. I have a ring camera so I “know” who is at the front door, but it is something to think about if this could be a concern for you in your house or neighborhood?At the time of review this is under $186 which is kind of in the middle of “deadbolts with features” like this and maybe a little on the lower side for “name brand ones” like this? I’m still on the fence about the “auto unlock blue tooth” as a reviewer as for ME it works fine as I live in a neighborhood that is SUPER SAFE and I live alone with my Dachshunds…but I do have concerns if you have multiple people in the house including kids that have the “unlock feature on” you could inadvertently “unlock” your house when you thought it was “locked”? Overall, I like it and find it works for me without issues but may not be for everybody.

Auto Unlock via Bluetooth almost never works
The main reason I bought this lock was the auto-unlock capability using Bluetooth from your phone when you approach from the outside and the door is lock. So far, this capability has worked exactly once. However, it frequently auto-unlocks when I walk near the _inside_ of the door.Otherwise, a good keypad lock.
